The Case of the Repeat-Blowing Fuse

Every trip starts with a walk of the systems — lights, water, slides — better to catch something wrong in the driveway than six hundred miles down the road. This time, the driveway found it for us.

A 15-amp fuse blew the instant it touched the panel. Not eventually — instantly, every single time. The position was labeled “kitchen area overhead LTS,” so that’s where I started looking.

Voltage at the fuse socket read a clean 13.25V, so the panel itself was fine — whatever was pulling this fuse down was somewhere downstream.

Here’s what cost me the most time: the label lied. That circuit doesn’t touch the kitchen at all. It feeds the ceiling lights over the front recliners, the ceiling lights over the TV lift, and — as it turned out — a motion-activated stair light nobody had told me about.

Every resistance test on the load side came back clean, no short sitting there waiting to be found. But the blown fuse said otherwise — the element vaporized, the glass blackened. Something had dumped hundreds of amps through it. Clean at rest and vicious under load only points one way: a fault that only shows itself at full battery voltage, past anything a multimeter’s little test current can provoke.

So I chased it the slow way. Pulled both branch wires off the panel, capped them, put in a fresh fuse — held. Reconnected the first branch — held, recliner lights back on. Reconnected the second — blew instantly. Branch confirmed.

Followed that branch to a switch box behind the TV lift and found a second wire spliced onward from there, feeding a motion-activated stair light that — now that I think about it — had been flickering on and off for weeks before any of this started. Pulled that leg out of the splice and capped it. Fuse held. Recliner lights, TV lights, everything back — and it hasn’t blinked since.

The stair light’s LED driver was the whole story: it degrades, it flickers, and eventually it starts conducting hard enough to vaporize a fuse element the instant full battery voltage hits it, all while reading perfectly innocent to a multimeter at rest. Fixed the panel label too, while I had the cover off — no future me, or anyone else who ever works on this trailer, should lose an afternoon to a sticker that’s just wrong.

That stair light was never something we wanted anyway, so the leg stays capped for good unless someone down the line decides to hang a new fixture on it.

Another one caught close to home instead of out on the road — which is really the whole point of poking at everything before we leave.
